Today, I’m going to talk about a sport I played when I was in college called Ultimate Frisbee.

I decided to talk about this because last week, when I handled one of Olga’s adult class, I mentioned that I played frisbee and everyone was like “Uhm, isn’t that what you play with dogs??” My answer was.. “Uhh, yes but it also is an official game / sport played by humans”. Haha.

I’m guessing the sport is not widely popular yet here in Japan so, let me introduce and explain it to you.

What is it?

Ultimate Frisbee is a non-contact team sport that you play with a flying disc. It is kind of similar with rugby, without the scary and violent tackling.

What you Need

Flying Disc

First and foremost, you need a flying disc or commonly known as frisbee.

Here is a picture of me holding one. Don’t mind my face and my body, I weighed 56kg during this time because of stress eating hahaha.

A wide place to play

To play frisbee, you will need a wide area to run around. It may be a grassy field or you can also play by the beach. I tried this with my friends and it is a lot more tiring since you’ll be running on sand.

Cleats

Of course, you will need proper shoes so you can run properly and will not slide into the grass. This is optional. If you’re going to play on the sand, you can just stay barefooted.

Friends

You will need friends for this game since this is a team sport. Basically, you need to form two teams with 3-7 members each.

And that’s it! You’re all set! You just need to know the rules and how to throw the disc properly. And I’ll try my best to explain it to you.

Rules

Always remember, the goal of the game is: To pass the disc in or beyond your opponent’s base without dropping disc.

In the field, there will be two end zones or let’s call it, base. You can decide where these bases will be and how far from each other it will be.

2. To begin with, the players will stand on their respective bases. To start, one player of a team will throw the disc as far away from their base. This is called “pulling” or “to pull the disc”.

3. One rule is that if the disc touches the ground because you or your teammate dropped it or didn’t catch it or, automatically, the disc possession goes to the opponent.

4. Let’s say you have the disc. The rule is if you have the disc, you CAN’T run. So, you have to throw the disc to your teammate without your opponent blocking it or stealing it from you. This is where team work and proper disc handling is needed.

5. If the disc is with your opponent, you have to try your best to block their passes to their teammate.

5. If you pass the disc to or beyond your opponent’s base and your teammate catches it, you score a point.

Frisbee is a very interesting game. You can play it in a field or at the beach; rain or shine. It’s a good way to learn new skills, to exercise, to bond with your friends and also to make new friends! I hope you could try this game!

Disclaimer: I am not a good frisbee player haha! It may look like it because of the pictures but I’m really not. I just enjoy playing it with my friends.
