During craft/activity time, there are a lot of school things to remember so kids tend to forget the difficult ones. I bet moms and dads know these things already so please use the English names as much as possible especially when at home.

Scissors　（はさみ）

It can be pronounced as /see-zerz/. This is very important when doing craft so remind the kids to repeat it with you rather than saying it in Japanese.

発音に気を付けて、

Glue（ボンド）

This has a different name in Japanese but in English we say, “glue” /gloo/.

これは、日本でいうボンド。

英語では、glue” /gloo/です。

Paste　（のり）

“Let’s stick them together with paste. ”

”のりで、貼り合わせましょう”

“Teacher Shella ,the paste has gone hard！ ”

” Shella 先生、のりが固まっちゃった！”なんて使い方をします。

Colored pens

Kids usually just say the color that they want but it’s better if they could say “Can I have a blue colored pen, please?”

子どもたちはよく、”ブループリーズ”といいますが、なるべく、”ブルーのペンをください”と言ってもらいましょう。

お日さまの色は何？形は？お日さまはどんな顔をしていたっけ？

“What shape is this?”　ここはどんな形だった？

“It’s circle” or “It’s triangle”　まるだよ、さんかくだよ

“What color is this triangle?”　このさんかくは何色かな？

“It’s yellow” or “It’s orange”　黄色とオレンジだよ

Hello everyone! Temperature has dropped this week and the winds are cooler. Clearly, we are going into season transition from Summer to Fall.

But before the season ends, the kids in Kikko English School did a special arts and crafts for the summer – cool Mister Sun! In the process, they were asked to identify the shapes and colors used and their creativity were showed through the final output of their works. Usual conversations starts with me asking “What shape is this?” (pointing to the paper plate or the colored paper to be used) and they would answer enthusiastically “It’s circle” or “It’s triangle”. And I would then proceed to “What color is this triangle?” and they would respond either “It’s yellow” or “It’s orange”. Aside from this, I would also encourage the kids to ask whatever they need or want using simple English phrases like “Glue please” , “May I borrow red colored pen please” or “Can I have a yellow triangle please”. Doing all this together makes it fun as well as educational for the kids.

Making Nemo? (August- Craft)

G’day mate! (This is a common greeting in Australia.)

Now, we are in the typhoon season. Better prepare your umbrellas and raincoats to avoid getting wet.

But even with the weather like this, many of our students still come and study. Maybe they miss being around their classmates or perhaps, their teachers? 🙂

Let me introduce to you our latest craft.

そうです！ニモと、彼の友だちを紙皿で作ります。映画の”ファインディング・ニモ”、アメリカのアニメーション映画でお馴染みですね。

Yes, that’s Nemo and his other friend.

If you’re not familiar, Nemo is a famous character from a Pixar movie entitled “Finding Nemo”. It’s famous among kids, teenagers and even adults.

That is why the kids where so delighted to make their very own version of it. We made use of the extra paints from our summer school event and some paper plates.

Beforehand, parents where instructed to have their kids bring their own smock.

見て！すごいでしょう？”これ何色？”　”どんな海の動物たちを作ってる？”　”そこ、気をつけて切ってね”　”その色をちょうだい”　など英語で先生が聞きながら、進めていきます。最初のうちは、先生が何を言っているかが、全然わからないのだけど、みんな、そのうちにわかるようになるから、焦らなくても大丈夫です！

Look at that! Is not it great?

The kids really enjoyed making it. This activity also let us reinforce their knowledge about simple action words, colors and the like.

“What color is this?” , “What kind of sea animal are you making?” , “Cut the parts carefully.” , “Please pass the color …” , Are just some of the questions and phrases that we used.

Even if some of them can not really speak well, but the mere thought that they tried to understand and respond to what you say is already an achievement.
