Before the Summer
Hello Everyone! It’s a rainy Wednesday, the first rain in June – which is the rainy season in Japan or what they call “tsuyu“. So, don’t forget to bring your umbrella in going to school or work to keep yourself from getting wet or catching a cold.
For most people in Japan, tsuyu is a sign that Summer is near. It falls around June to early July and after that comes the hot and humid season.
Some people might not like rain because it makes them blue, change an outdoor plan or in worse cases, cancel an activity or appointments. I don’t know why but I personally love rainy days in Japan. There are still some nice things to do on a rainy day in Japan!
Hunt for Hydrangeas
If everyone likes the cherry blossoms in Spring, I love the less-famoous flowers that bloom during other times of the year just like the hydrangeas that burst into bloom on bushes in shades of baby blue, lilac and blush pink from June till early July.
If you want a great view of those flowers, you can visit Meigetsuin Shrine and Hasedera Temple in Kamakura or may be the Kyoto Botanical Gardens where they have 180 types of hydrangeas.
Irises/hana-shobu or Japanese water iris
Irises are also in full bloom during this season. These flowers also need a lot of showers in June.
Meiji Jingu’s inner gardens and Hamarikyu Gardens in Tokyo; Suigo Sawara Aquatic Botanical Garden in Chiba; and Byakko Pond in Heian Shrine Kyoto are places where you can enjoy them the most.
Visit Japanese Gardens and Temples
I remember when my mom came to Japan to visit us a few years ago, it was raining almost everyday but it didn’t discourage us to take her to nearby Japanese Gardens, by the way, she loves plants and flowers so much! and Temples. You’ll know just how lush and wonderful greenery can be in the rain.
There is not much crowd on rainy days, so there’ll be fewer people to jostle with and so you may find these spaces just for you!
Soak in an Onsen or Sento
Just like in Winter, the rainy season is perfect for an onsen even just in town so that you can get back home easily after being refreshed and relaxed. Watching the rain fall while soaking in an outdoor bath is pure luxury, especially if yours happens to look out into the mountains.
Crave for Hot Food
Teacher Jake and I love food! Eating is one of our bonding moments actually 😁 So eating hot food like nabe (hotpot), curry rice, ramen, soup curry and spicy dishes taste even better on a cold, wet day.
These are few suggestions you can add up on your To-do-list during the Rainy season just to make these days special and not to feel down and blue.
Don’t let Rainy days let you down 😔 As the song says: There’s always sunshine after the rain! ☀
